How to talk about money before you move in together

TL;DR

Have the money chat while it's exciting, not urgent. Frame it as building the life admin for your new home: "how do you want to split things so neither of us ever feels weird about it?"

You have found the apartment. You have argued pleasantly about couches. You have not, however, said the word “budget” out loud, because nothing dims new-home sparkle like a spreadsheet.

Here is the plot twist: the money chat IS the romance. Nothing says “I plan on this lasting” like being willing to talk about bills before they arrive.

Why do couples dodge the money conversation?

Because money is never just money. It is childhood, security, freedom and fear wearing a dollar sign. Two people can love each other completely and still run entirely different operating systems: one saves for safety, one spends for joy, and neither has ever said it out loud.

Move in without the conversation and you do not avoid the differences. You just agree to discover them mid-argument about air conditioning.

Money fights are rarely about the money. They are about the conversation you never had.
Moving in together is a merger wearing a romance costume. Do the due diligence while it is cute. The alternative is doing it at 11pm over an electricity bill in month three.Ness, founder of Good Chat

How do you actually start it?

  • Anchor it to the move. “Before we get the keys, can we sort how we want to handle money so it never gets weird?” The move gives you a natural, blame-free excuse.
  • Trade money stories first. “What was money like in your house growing up?” Understanding beats arithmetic. The numbers are easy once you know the wiring.
  • Agree the system, not just the split. Joint account or percentages? What counts as a “check with you first” purchase? Boring questions now, zero resentment later.

What does getting it right look like?

It looks like nothing, and that is the whole point. Bills arrive and nobody flinches. One of you buys something silly and it is fine, because silly was budgeted for. The most financially compatible couples are not the ones who earn the same. They are the ones with no surprises.

Why do we all feel weird talking about money? These cards take that away. By card three everyone was just being honest. No weirdness at all.Remy, in a five-star review of the Money deck

You are about to share a fridge, a lease and a bathroom. You can survive sharing a spreadsheet. Have the chat before the keys, and the keys stay exciting.

Good questions

When is the right time to talk money?
Before the lease, after you're serious. The conversation is lighter when nothing is urgent yet.
What if we earn very different amounts?
Then percentages beat halves. Splitting proportionally keeps things fair without anyone quietly going broke.
What if they refuse to talk about it?
That's information. Someone who can't discuss money calmly before moving in won't find it easier after.
