Why does date three feel like a cliff?
Because dates one and two run on rails. There is a script: origins, logistics, jobs, hobbies, light banter about the menu. Date three is where the script runs out, and most people respond by re-running it (“so how WAS your week?”) until the whole thing dies of politeness.

What should you actually ask?
- Swap facts for formation. “What’s something you’ve changed your mind about in the last few years?” You learn how they think, not just what they have done.
- Go hypothetical. “If money stopped mattering tomorrow, what would your Tuesday look like?” Dreams are more interesting than job descriptions.
- Trade small confessions. “What’s the most out-of-character thing you’ve ever done?” Offer yours first. Date three is exactly the right depth for this.

Time goes weird. The venue starts packing up around you and neither of you noticed. You get home and realise you never asked about their week, and it did not matter, because you learned something real instead.
